One year ago, aliens parked in orbit around Earth and upended life as we know it.

Lettie Gallardo is in dire straits. Except that they do. Or more accurately, her integration partner does. Kalaenus Lokurian is a mean-looking venandi with red eyes and exoskeletal plates as black as coal, and he chooses her out of thousands of applicants. It doesn't matter that he looks like a demon and the other aliens skirt around him. Lettie just wants to breathe. She's got a stack of bills, and Uncle Sam is willing to pay them.

Besides, the towering war machine makes her feel safe, and she hasn't felt that way in months...
